A Place in The Rocks Description
Today, The Rocks is a well known tourist precinct: the old warehouses and homes have been converted into shops and cafes. The once tight-knit, working class neighborhood of, largely, waterside workers and their families has long gone but their voices can still be heard in the buildings that remain. In the heart of The Rocks, on the corner of Gloucester Street and Cumberland Place, stands a terrace of four houses, now know as Susannah Place. Built in 1844 and typically English in design, the houses survived largely unchanged through the slum clearances of the early 20th century and the area's redevelopment in the 1970s. For nearly 150 years these houses were home to over 100 different families: their past occupancy still very much evident in the many layers of wallpapers, paint, linoleums, modifications and repairs that have survived. A Place in the Rocks takes us on a journey through The Rocks from its early colonial beginnings, along its streets and into the often-overlooked everyday lives of ordinary people. The publication is lavishly illustrated and beautifully designed. Author Anna Cossu | 2007 | Soft cover with flaps | 144 pages | Fully illustrated in color and black and white throughout.
