Sydney Fish Market
The place Sydney Fish Market is an authentic wholesale and retail facility, widely recognised as Australia’s premier seafood centre as well as one of the world’s great fish markets. The market is open seven days a week and trades more than 15 million kilograms of seafood annually. It is firmly established as a favourite place for both Sydneysiders and visitors.
The location The market is 1.2 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD and is the largest single property within the Blackwattle Bay precinct. Neighbouring suburbs are Ultimo, Glebe and Rozelle.

The proposal In early 2001, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd began exploring opportunities to rejuvenate the market. The aim was to preserve Sydney Fish Market’s unique sense of place while integrating the facility into the rejuvenation of the broader Blackwattle Bay precinct as a commercially viable working harbour, leisure and education destination. A draft master plan was prepared for the site with the following key features:
- an additional 7,500 m2 of open space, including a 1,830m2 public square
- a new continuous foreshore promenade
- a new northerly view corridor from the foreshore to light rail station and market entrance
- a new 18-metre wide view corridor from the foreshore through to Gipps Street
- better pedestrian access and safety through three new gateways
Project status In February 2005 the Sydney Fish Market Master Plan was approved, with conditions, by the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources.
The Master Plan (see Related Links on this page) is now the guiding document for any future redevelopment of the Fish Market site.
Please note: A master plan by itself is not development consent and does not allow any construction to proceed. This means that Sydney Fish Market will require development applications to be lodged, exhibited for public comment and approved prior to any construction or changes to the Market.
What happens next? Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd, which operates the Market, is now considering how and when to best proceed with any renewal, including the next step of detailed design and development approval. Planning Details
