Battle for The Rocks: identity, heritage and conservation
For Years: 9-10
Key Learning Area: History
Maximum: 75 students per session
Program Duration: 120 minutes
Program Cost: $11 per student
An interactive excursion through The Rocks precinct, comparing today's attitudes to identity, heritage and conservation with those of the 1960s and 1970s. Content includes an examination of the Green Bans, the historic workers' struggle to halt development, and aims to answer the question: 'How and why have Australians sought to preserve their natural and built environments?'
The Battle for The Rocks program highlights the combined struggles of The Rocks' residents and unions to preserve significant historical sites within the area. Students follow a path through the precinct, interpretating heritage listed sites that were ear-marked for demolition 30 years ago as well as sites of many of the battles, including: The Rocks Square, Sergeant Major's Row, The Sirius building, Merchant's House, George Street and Cadman's Cottage.
To assist you in getting the most out of the program and to maximise the experience for your students, Sydney Learning Adventures has created comprehensive Teacher Resource Packs for each program.
The Battle for The Rocks Teacher Resource Pack includes:
- Explicit outcomes for Stage 5 history students.
- Detailed background information for teachers outlining the area of study including: an overview of the concepts underlying Green Bans, information about the site of the first Green Ban at Kelly's Bush and a short history of The Battle for The Rocks
- Tips about teaching a specific literary focus, in this case the structure of a debate
- A bibliography and a list of suggested resources and an excursion timetable and map
- A range of activity sheets to photocopy for students.
