The Rocks Discovery Museum tour stages 2 and 3

Location: The Rocks
For Years: 3 - 6
Key Learning Area: HSIE
Maximum: 50 students per session
Program Duration: 120 minutes
Program Cost: $11 per student

The Rocks Discovery Museum tour looks at significant people and groups that have inhabited and interacted in The Rocks and how they have contributed to Australia's identity. In the museum, students look at key changes in the Sydney area from the time of the First Nation through to today.

The Museum, housed in a restored 1850s sandstone warehouse, tells the story of The Rocks from pre-European days to the present.

Home to a unique collection of images and archaeological artefacts found in The Rocks, the exhibits are highly interactive; using touch screens, audio and visual elements to bring the history of the area alive.

Learn about the area's traditional landowners, the establishment of the English colony and the time when sailors, whalers and traders made the area their home; through to the 1970s union-led protests which preserved this unique part of Sydney for future generations to explore and enjoy.

Students are guided through an interactive adventure featuring four permanent exhibitions:rocks discovery museum resource centre

  • Warrane introduces the Aboriginal history of The Rocks focusing on the Cadigal people;
  • Colony looks at early European settlement and its impact on the Cadigal people;
  • Port takes us through the rolicking days of The Rocks as a major port town; and
  • Transformations reveals the extraordinary changes in the area over the past 100 years.

To assist you in getting the most out of the program and to maximise the experience for your students, Sydney Learning Adventures has created comprehensive Teacher Resource Packs for each program.
