Our sustainable future
With a clear vision for its precincts, the Authority has identified the need for sustainability, social responsibility and economic viability at the very core of its place management of Darling Harbour, The Rocks and Barangaroo.
In 2007, Darling Harbour and The Rocks became the first precincts in NSW to target eco-footprint reductions, with Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority only the second NSW government agency to pledge to become carbon neutral. Under its sustainability targets, the Authority is:
- aiming to make its business operations carbon neutral by 2010
- aiming to reduce the carbon emissions of The Rocks and Darling Harbour by 80 per cent by 2020.
The Authority aims to achieve its targets by a number of initiatives including the:
- use of harvested rainwater in all its parks
- recycling of 80 per cent of all waste generated
- reduction of potable water consumption by 80 per cent
- creation of a sustainable procurement policy
- creation of sustainability guides to help tenants reduce their carbon footprint.
The redevelopment of 88 George Street in The Rocks, which was awarded Australia's first 5 Star Green Star rating for a State heritage listed building, and the implementation of the first water harvesting scheme in the Sydney CBD at Darling Harbour, are other examples of the Authority's committment to sustainability.
