
White Bay
The site
- White Bay covers an area of around 19 hectares along the northern edge of Bays Precinct.
- The site is bounded by water to the south and east, the residential suburb of Balmain to the north and White Bay Power Station to the west.
- White Bay is owned by Sydney Ports Corporation.
Its history
- White Bay is predominantly sited on land which was reclaimed in the late 19th century to allow deepwater berthing.
- Historically, White Bay played an important role in the development of Sydney with its deepwater berths and access to the rail lines through Rozelle.
- In the early 20th century White Bay was used for timber shipment and grain storage.
- Towards the middle of the 20th century White Bay become a hub for coal handling for the adjacent White Bay Power Station.
- Following the development of Port Botany in the 1960s and, more recently, the development of Port Kembla, many of White Bay’s previous uses have been relocated to these sites.
- P&O stevedoring operations ended at the site in 2003.
Short to medium term uses
- Approval has been given for an $8 million marine refuelling and supply facility at White Bay Berth 6 on Sydney Harbour. For more information view the Minister’s media release.
- White Bay has been flagged as a possible permanent location for the cruise passenger terminal, which will be relocated from Barangaroo to a site west of Sydney Harbour Bridge. For more information view the Minister's media release.
- The remainder of White Bay is currently used for a number of activities that require a land/water interface. Current and indicative uses include major vessel repairs, dry bulk storage and common-user shipping berths.
