ROZELLE RAIL YARDS
The site
- The Rozelle Rail Yards is a 19-hectare site located in the western reaches of Bays Precinct.
- The rail yards are bounded by the residential suburbs of Rozelle and Lilyfield to the north and west, Annandale to the south and Victoria Road to the east.
- The site is owned by a number of NSW Government agencies including Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, Sydney Ports Corporation and RailCorp.
Its history
- The Rozelle Rail Yards were originally constructed as holding yards for trains waiting entry into Darling Harbour and the Darling Island goods and marshalling yards.
- This use never eventuated however, as the yards were used as the major marshalling point for bulk wheat and coal exports from White Bay instead.
- During the Second World War the American Army utilised the yards as a base for offloading supplies in Sydney.
- Use of the Rozelle Rail Yards ceased in 1997, however through-access to White Bay remains.
Uses
- The Rozelle Rail Yards have been chosen as the site for the stabling yards, maintenance depot and operational control centre for the Sydney Metro. For more information visit the Sydney Metro homepage.
- The Sydney Metro will become operational in 2015.
